October 14, 2023 6:00 PM

The Racquet Club of Chicago, 1365 North Dearborn Parkway, Chicago, IL 60610

The Irish Georgian Society requests the pleasure of your company at the Racquet Club of Chicago.

About the Talk

Dr. Alicia St. Leger will give a talk about the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the oldest such club in the world, established in Cobh, Co. Cork in 1720. Within this historical overview, Dr. St. Leger will provide background on the construction of the Yacht Club’s neoclassical clubhouse in 1854, designed by English architect Anthony Salvin.

With the Royal Cork Yacht Club now occupying another clubhouse, the 1854 structure is the home of the Sirius Arts Centre, a multi-disciplinary arts organization with an emphasis on the cultivation of national and international visual artists and programming that encourages a more direct participation in the arts by the local community.

Of note, there will be discussion on the plans underway to repair, restore, and secure this historic building for the future, and the Irish Georgian Society’s role in that mission.
