Ireland's Historic Gardens is a documentary film commissioned by the Irish Georgian Society, written and presented by author and historian Robert O’Byrne (Luggala Days, The Irish Georgian Society - A Celebration, Romantic Irish Homes, Ruins of Ireland); and produced and directed by David Hare (Great Lighthouses of Ireland, Ballyfin - Portrait of an Irish Country House; and Henry McIlhenny, Master of Glenveagh).
The documentary examines the history of Ireland’s country house gardens over the last 400 years during which time garden design has reflected political and social changes taking place within the country.
The documentary is part of the Society’s current focus on the Irish Garden. The Society’s upcoming exhibition, In Harmony with Nature: The Irish Country House Garden, is scheduled to open May 19, 2022 at the City Assembly House in Dublin. At that time, there will also be a remounting of the September 2021 exhibition, Stepping Through the Gate: Inside Ireland’s Walled Gardens, to allow visitors to experience both exhibitions celebrating the evolution of Irish gardens over the course of the last three hundred years.
This film is part of a year-long focus on the Irish Garden culminating in the opening of Garden Exhibitions at the City Assembly House in Dublin on Thursday, May 19, 2022. The Exhibitions and related garden initiatives have been funded through major lead gifts from Susan and Coleman P. Burke. We are tremendously grateful for their support. We also wish to thank all of our American donors who have made these initiatives possible.
